New guidance on whether juries are free to decide a case according to their consciences was given by the Court of Appeal yesterday when judges upheld the convictions of five climate change activists.

The women were found guilty in 2024 of destroying windows and panels at a bank entrance in 2021. The cost of repairs was put at more than £200,000. Most defendants received suspended prison sentences for causing criminal damage. They had claimed the bank’s shareholders would have consented.
