The Bonavero Institute of Human Rights — part of the law faculty at the University of Oxford — kindly held a launch event last week for my book Enemies of the People? — How Judges Shape Society. It was chaired by Kate O'Regan, director of the institute, and the panellists were Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, former lord chief justice of England and Wales, Professor Paul Craig, emeritus professor of English law at Oxford, and Helen Mountfield QC, principal of Mansfield College, Oxford.
We had a lively and enjoyable discussion about some of the issues raised in the book — all the more interesting because the former chief justice was one of those accused by the Daily Mail of being an “enemy of the people”.
