Like so many people around the world, I had the great privilege of meeting the Queen and exchanging a few words with her. The first occasion was in 2007, when she visited the Old Bailey to mark the court’s centenary. The second was in 2015, when she held a reception at Buckingham Palace to mark the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta.
She was charming, lively and extremely well-informed.
Another great privilege of mine was my appointment in 2016 as as one of Her Majesty’s counsel learned in the law honoris causa — honorary silk, or QC (hon). With the accession of His Majesty, Queen’s Counsel become King’s Counsel — a rank that nobody has held for 70 years.
May her memory be for a blessing.

I of course mourn her but I am a committed though far from naive republican. I deplore South American Presidencies with no exception I can thing of unless it might be Uruguay which seems ostensibly a very democratic state under its now just retired man of the people living in an incredibly modest house and driving a rockery aged rattling Fiat UNO.
