I’m going to reserve judgment on the new justice secretary Shabana Mahmood and the attorney general Richard Hermer KC until we hear what they have to say. Instead, I bring you news of a reserved judgment delivered last Friday. And there’s a footnote on Lucy Letby.

First, though, I can’t resist a few initial thoughts on the prime minister’s new legal appointments.
