Government plans to cut the backlog of more than 73,000 cases awaiting trial in the Crown Court are facing significant challenges, it emerged last week. A justice minister disclosed that more lay magistrates will be needed in England and Wales than are currently being recruited. And a senior KC questioned the effectiveness of a major reform that ministers are now considering.
