A rather dull-looking announcement was put out by the judicial communications office on Friday afternoon. I suspect it had been waiting to be signed off by the lord chancellor: Dominic Raab has had a lot on his mind recently and, even in normal times, he is not known for getting through his paperwork promptly.

Friday’s announcement was opaque but important. It’s the latest development in a plan to bring the courts and tribunals of England and Wales together in “one judiciary”. What’s new, as far as I can see, is that the lord chancellor has now committed the government to introducing the necessary legislation.
