Nearly six years ago, Liz Truss took a constitutional position that was, according to the lord chief justice of the day, “absolutely wrong”. Yesterday, the uncodified British constitution took its revenge. One of its most fundamental rules is that you cannot serve as prime minister without the confidence of the House of Commons.
