Treason doth never prosper
But that’s no reason to outlaw it by rushing through new legislation
The Home Office security minister Tom Tugendhat has again floated the idea of reforming the Treason Act 1351, it appears from a report in The Times:
Proposals being drawn up by the Home Office would make it an offence to aid a state or organisation that is attacking or preparing to attack the UK or UK forces in an armed conflict. It would apply to anybody in the UK or the actions of British citizens anywhere in the world.
This is an objective that Tugendhat has pursued for some years. Now he is in a position to do something about it. But do we need a new treason law? Would it in fact be counter-productive?
