Rwanda revisited
What will happen if today’s amendments are passed?
MPs gave the government’s Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill a second reading last month by 313 votes to 269, a majority of 44. But what will happen during the bill’s committee stage, which begins today and will be taken on the floor of the Commons? Might there be enough MPs to approve amendments proposed by, among others, the former immigration minister Robert Jenrick?
I published an instant analysis of the bill on 7 December and then an assessment of the political implications four days later. The issues have not changed over the past month and so I won’t repeat them here. Readers may recall that they are centred on clause 4 of the bill.
