Thank you for noticing that. I find "they" very confusing when used as a singular personal pronoun in some contexts — but it was not too difficult to avoid using it, as you saw. It was probably harder for the court.
I am very happy not to use a pronoun that the person referred to does not want me to use. I'm not so sure whether that person can insist I use a pronoun that I would prefer to avoid.
